SFERS, CalPERS and certain other California public retirement systems provide “reciprocal” retirement benefits. Members can use service 
credit earned under each reciprocal retirement system to meet eligibility requirements in each plan (if qualified). When a member retires simultaneously from all plans, his/her highest compensation earned with any of the reciprocal systems will be used to calculate benefits in each system. Generally, to qualify for reciprocity under SFERS a member must meet the following criteria:
- Became a member of SFERS on or after June 29, 1988 and terminated employment with CalPERS or a reciprocal retirement system, and within six (6) months after termination date became a member of SFERS, or terminated employment with the City and County of San Francisco on or after June 29, 1988 and became a member of a reciprocal system within six (6) months after termination date with City and County of San Francisco. - At retirement, a member must apply to retire from each system separately using the same retirement date.
